The father of O'Grady is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents who resided in Wheaton located in Illinois and graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured on several commercials on television, but then moved into Los Angeles. Her career O'Grady started her career as a model for Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a recurring lead in ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included programs for TV as well as independent films, among numerous other roles. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC cop show NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. Each of the years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of the Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
